Tokyo: The Tokyo Sky Tree Tower, under construction in Sumida Ward, will stand 634m tall – 24m taller than originally planned – when it opens in 2012, making it the world’s tallest broadcasting transmission tower, its operating company said on Friday.
Officials at Tobu Tower Sky Tree Co said the extra height will be created by extending the antenna portion that starts 514m above the ground.
The change will not affect the tower’s structure, nor will it entail additional cost, they said.
Kinya Miyasugi, president of the operating company, said the decision to add height came after the company learned that another tower being built in Guangzhou, China, will be about 610m tall.
